Consuming BW data in SSM

After following the SSM Configuration guide, we were successful in importing a BEx query into the Application Server (PAS).

Now we have data in PAS, that resides in a new model (cube), what is the best practice to consume this data in SSM?

I see 2 options:

1. In the SSM administrator, create a KPI and select the new PAS model connection and select the variables.  Assuming you have create the _ACT, _TAR, _TARDEV etc variables in the model.

2. Use an existing model that has the variables from the cubebuilder reference the new BW data model.

I cannot see any documentation on how to use the BW data once it has been uploaded to PAS.
