How to convert the yyyymmdd format to dd.mm.yyyy and pass this 10 characters as a data type sy-datum to a field?

Hello experts,

i got a requirement to  convert the date sy-datum format to DD.MM.YYYY and to pass the same value in a Tcode field which has a data type DATUM. i tried to conversion Routines also iam getting in the format, say .03.02.2016 but when I pass the value to the field it takes only 03.02.20 because of Sy-datum type. how can i over come and pass the 10 characters as a value to sy-datum field?
